My guide for setting goals

Goal setting may seem simple and easy, and in fact sitting down and writing a list of goals is. But, it can be easier said than done, achieving those goals is just as important as setting them.

Statistics suggest that only 8% of people that set new year goals actually achieve them, and to me that is shocking. So, with this blog post, I am hoping to provide you with a guide that will help you set goals and achieve success!

Write it down – This step is pretty obvious but it should be the first thing that you do when goal setting. Writing your goals down in detail means that you will more likely follow through with your goals and plans to achieve them. I personally write down my goals every week, what do I want to achieve this week? As well as other things like little personal goals. No matter how many goals you write down, of course you only have to do one a day and see how you feel. Try to make goal setting work for you, it shouldn’t be a chore.

Set specific goals – When you are setting your goals they need to be specific to you! You want to vision yourself doing that goal to give yourself some clarity. Therefore, to set those specific goals you want to be able to visualise yourself doing that goal and if you can’t then maybe it is not the right goal for you. For example, one of my goals is to buy a house with my boyfriend and I’ve made a Pinterest Board of how I want it to look as well as planning out my finances each month. By being specific with the goals you are setting, you can imagine them happening and so you truly believe that this goal can be achieved.

Set a date – When you are goal setting it is so important to set a date in which you want to achieve them. Now when you are doing this you really want to be specific again. Try to be as realistic as you can, even if that date is later on in the year. By doing this it helps you to break down that goal setting process and will help you to work on milestones along the way. Of course whilst you are doing this make sure you are being realistic and you are giving yourself time to achieve this goal, which will help set you up for long-term success.

Explanations for your goals – You might want to come up with an explanation as to why you want that goal. this isn’t for anyone else but yourself, don’t try to justify the goal only explain what it means to you! When you want something strong enough then nothing will stand in your way and you will work hard towards that goal because you want it that bad. Think about what the goal means to you, what it will give you and how it will affect your life.

Effectively manage your time – It is easy to set yourself goals and then fall into a trap of putting off doing things to achieve it. Therefore, you will need to know how to manage your time effectively. If you have a busy life, only set yourself time to achieve when you have the time. There are time management systems, but what I use is a diary, so simple and effective. It really helps me to manage my time but here’s my blog post about managing your time. https://rachelfoy96.wordpress.com/2020/12/18/manage-your-time-better-with-these-productivity-tips/

And that is pretty much it, my guide to setting goals. These goals could be anything that you would like to achieve in life, but now you have a chance to achieve them effectively.

I hope you find these tips useful and it will help you in terms of setting those goals in the future.

  1. Great suggestions for setting goals! For me, writing them down is the most important step. It makes them more real, not just a random thought. I really like the idea of coming up with explanations for my goals. I think that would really help motivate me to achieve them. Thanks for sharing this guide! It is really helpful.
